Did someone say #fishyfridays 🤩🤩 Last week our res Did someone say #fishyfridays 🤩🤩 Last week our research and monitoring team conducted the annual conch surveys in the backreef and seagrass areas of #holchanmarinereserve .

Why is this important? 🤔
Well, this assessment will give us a picture of the conch population in the marine reserve.

Why do we need such information? 🤔
Because it helps us to determine if there is a mature population of queen conch that would be capable of reproducing. Also, the presence of juvenile conch can indicate that there will be more conch later on to keep reproducing when the current mature ones have been harvested. These are valuable pieces of information for such a commercially important species to Belize. 😱👌🌊

#tourismthursday 🤩🤩 Did you know that Shark Ray Al #tourismthursday 🤩🤩 Did you know that Shark Ray Alley was added to #holchanmarinereserve boundaries in 1999? It is the only zone in the entire reserve where feeding of the sharks are allowed. Only tourguides are allowed to do the feeding, this is done by throwing pieces of sardines from the boat, or by placing the sardines in a chum pipe and lowering it into the water. This way visitors can get a great view of the nurse sharks feeding. While snorkeling with the sharks you are not allowed to pet them, but you can take pictures and great memories, so come and swim if you're brave 😊🦈🌊🤿

Happy #worldoceanday 🌊🌊 This year’s theme, Planet Happy #worldoceanday 🌊🌊 This year’s theme, Planet Ocean: Tides are changing, it is a call to action for everyone to make a difference by reducing our consumption of single-use plastics, supporting sustainable seafood and advocating for policies that protect the ocean. Therefore, let’s pledge to reduce, reuse and redesign the way we produce and consume plastics. Let’s support sustainable fishing practices and advocate for marine conservation.
In celebration of World Ocean day we want to share some facts about the ocean:
1.	The Ocean covers 71% of our planet’s surface
2.	The Ocean is home to over 700,000 known species
3.	Oceans absorb about 25-30% of carbon dioxide consumed by humans

At Hol Chan, we want to know what are some creative ways you reuse plastics?

Happy #Wildwednesdays We only know parrots as bir Happy #Wildwednesdays
We only know parrots as birds, but did you know we also have them as fishes? 🐟🐟..yes we do! They are called parrot fishes because of their fused teeth which bears close resemblance to a bird's beak and their bright parrot-like colors.

Here is a fun fact of Parrot fishes, they poop sand! These fishes are primarily herbivores that eats algae. Therefore, they play an important role in tropical reef ecosystems by consuming and removing macroalgae, which otherwise would cover the reef, causing it to become unhealthy and hindering it from growth. However, while eating the algae they may take chunks of corals, once this hard substance goes through their digestive system it exits the body as sand. Studies have shown that about 85% of the sand on the coral reef related beaches you walk on are parrot fish poop! 😁

Removal of macroalgae allows the coral reef ecosystem to continue its natural process, therefore parrot fishes are also a protected species in Belize!!
